The NFL could have a bubble after all, but not until January.

During a conference call with reporters, NFL vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton suggested instituting a postseason bubble during the latest competition committee call.

Per Vincent, the NFL isn't ruling out the possibility of using a playoff bubble, noting all things are being considered.

Any sort of "bubble" scenario would need support from the players' union.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers asked during an NFLPA conference call last month about a player testing positive during Super Bowl week. Instituting a bubble for the playoffs could be a method to ensure the fairest postseason for all teams. We've seen the NBA and NHL have great success with the bubbles they've created to conduct their postseason competitions.

As with everything COVID-19 related, a lot could change in the coming months. It's possible if the season goes well, the league might not deem a bubble necessary. It's also possible that teams could be left to create their own insulation situations come January.

Other notes from Wednesday's conference call:

The NFL confirmed it would use an advisory committee of former GMs, head coaches and players to advise Commissioner Roger Goodell on things like postponements, outbreaks, etc., per NFL Network's Judy Battista. The league acknowledged using the Competition Committee for such decisions could create conflicts of interest.

Vincent added that the league is still working out potential seeding issues that could arise if games are postponed or canceled and there becomes unbalanced schedules, including an uneven number of division games that could skew the standings.

NFL medical officer Dr. Allen Sills said the development of a new saliva COVID-19 test is an "exciting development" but noted the league is monitoring at this point.

"The biggest consideration for us is always the accuracy of the test. How good is the test?" Sills said, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

The NFL and NFLPA agreed to adjust testing protocol, removing any player or staff member who has a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis from the testing pool for 90 days, per Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports. The change falls in line with CDC guidelines. All other protocols will still apply for such players or staff.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero later reported a key change in the latest travel protocols agreed upon by the NFL and NFLPA that will impact how players access food while on the road.

It does not feel like the NFL is starting in 3 weeks at all. I was gonna start a thread about this.

No NFL threads on main page of this forum, very few people outside of here have asked me about gambling, fantasy this year compared to years past. Think people just don't know what to expect and on the fantasy front people don't feel like betting on who does and doesn't get the rona over the next 4 months.

I dunno, just weird, I haven't thought about all the reasons why yet but Houston/KC is in 3 weeks.

Imo, NFL will kick off right on time Sept 10

Ditto but that wasn't what I was referring to.

I was saying lack of enthusiasm for the kickoff seems way down. Both in terms of interest at a site like that and my own anecdotal experiences.

Probably because people just don't know wtf to expect so kinda hard to have a conversation about how you feel about the AFC South or something.

I have no excitement at all as i'm not sure if the season will even start on time.

No preseason games arent helping.

I am in 2 fantasy leagues. In 1 league we have had very little chatter. In my other league, i am the commish and i have not sent out 1 email nor has anyone inquired about the league.

Still havent received any emails regarding survivor pools.

Kinda gloomy

It definitely doesn't have the usual vibe as we are only 3 weeks away from kick off.......but as long as they play, I don't care. I'm not a fantasy player, so I don't know much on that end.

I get what you're saying. And I agree. The enthusiasm is at a very quiet decibel compared to all other years.

I think that having no preseason to wet the appetite is going to hurt. The fine tuning of a team is important to fans. It lets them get a feel for what they can expect for the season, how new coaches and players fit in.

The uncertainty of how covid is to be handled is also a wet blanket. The NFL should have this clearly defined by now. And as you know without knowing the covid rules it is hard to restructure the fantasy rules, again dimming interest.

And lastly, there are a lot of people who want to see the political, black / white, issues pulled off the fields and courts. Kneeling during the anthem for questionable issues is sacrilegious to many of us. Management should never let this happen. Because some of us are swearing off watching our favorite passtime in protest.

Get your act together, NFL.

Yeah, people just don't know what to expect I think. Hard to have much opinion on 2020 season w/ the way things are right now.

They're gonna have to allow OL holding the first few weeks of the season or every D is gonna look like the '00 Ravens.

Politics being such a massive part of culture and an extension of entertainment now not going to help the NFL in an election year either.

Just seems like no one cares this year.

As long as we get to see at least the first half of the NFL season, I would be ok with just that.......because once the Nov elections come, it's gonna be crazier than we have ever seen politics, & the protesting, etc.......& let's not forget how the media & politicians want to push the Covid hysteria too.

I for one am pumped up. Haven't made a wager of any kind since the SB. I'm like a kid on Christmas eve.

The only adjustment I'm making is home field advantage for those teams who choose not to have fan support.
